Summary

Our complete Silicon Photomultiplier readout solution consists of a preamplified SiPM base, an Interface Module, and a 16-channel or 32-channel simultaneous sampling ADC.

All components are designed to work together but they can be used separately. Use the 4-channel readout to upgrade an existing 4-channel PSPMT system. Use the row-and-column readout to upgrade an existing PSPMT or cross-wire PMT system. The gated integrator DAQ can be used with many types of PMTs.



4-Channel Readout System


4-Channel Readout

4-channel bases can support any array size from 4x4 to 24x24. This multiplexed readout method encodes the centroid of a single event into four position signals (X+, X-, Y+, Y-). Each SiPM connects to a row-and-column matrix using our patented diode-coupled charge division readout. The rows and columns are further encoded into two positions signals per axis.

A 4-channel base connects to a 16-channel Interface Module using cable adapter model CA4216R4-3606.



4-Channel Interface Modules

4-channel Interface Modules assist with evaluating our 4-channel bases. They power the base, buffer four SiPM position signals for an external ADC, and provide a sum of the SiPM position signals to an external discriminator. These Interface Modules can connect directly to an oscilloscope or ADC using standard BNC or LEMO connectors.


Row & Column Readout System


Row-and-Column Readout

Row-and-column readout supports 8x8, 12x12, and 16x16 arrays. Each SiPM connects to a row-and-column matrix using our patented diode-coupled charge division readout. This multiplexed readout method encodes the centroid of a single event into row and column signals. This method can provide higher spatial resolution, improved image uniformity, and faster rate capability than 4-channel readout but requires more channels.

A row-and-column base connects to one or two 16-channel Interface Modules.



16-Channel Interface Modules

The 16-channel Interface Module powers the base, buffers preamplified SiPM signals for an external ADC, and provides an SiPM signal sum to the internal discriminator and to an optional external discriminator. The internal discriminator is sufficient for simple self-triggering applications. Complex triggering can be accomplished by connecting an external discriminator to the sum output and the TTL trigger input. The Interface Module connects to the MDU DAQ through a ribbon cable assembly.

Individual Readout

Individual readout bases support 4x4 SiPM arrays with one wideband preamplifiers for each SiPM. The base connects to our 16-channel Interface Module.


Data Acquisition


16-Channel and 32-Channel USB Data Acquisition for Photomultipliers

16-channel and 32-channel simultaneous sampling ADCs with gated integrators connect to our 16-channel Interface Module. They combine a high-performance FPGA with high-speed USB to provide sustained trigger rates up to 1.2 MHz for 16 channels and up to 600 kHz for 32 channels. The MDU40-GI32 is a dual version of the MDU20-GI16. Open-source C# and LabView example programs are provided.
